Travel Back In Time…. Williamsburg, VA

For my husbands birthday, we took a weekend getaway trip to Williamsburg, VA. This amazing place takes you back in time and teaches you about life back in the 1700s.

This place was so magical and is truly a nostalgic piece of history.

Colonial Williamsburg Ghost Tours

My favorite part of the trip was absolutely the ghost tour. This gave information into how people perceived ghost stories in the 1700s as well as talked about recent ghost sightings that those that work there as well as guests have witnessed.

Since I loved this so much, I thought I would do my own research as to why this amazing area is so haunted and this is what I found.

  1. Indian Burial Ground – it was recently determined that Colonial Williamsburg is built on an Indian Burial ground.
  2. Witch and Devil Accusations – during the 17th century, there were witch accusations and actual trials.
  3. Prisons and Mental Institutions – from 1704 until 1910, the jail remained opened with this resulting in violent deaths and executions occurring. Many of the deaths that occurred would be considered forms of torture in today’s society. In 1718, there were Blackbeard pirates that were held at the jail. There is a large tree behind the courthouse where many people were hanged. In 1774, the first hospital for the mentally ill was also founded in Williamsburg and the living conditions there were similar to living conditions within the jail. If I have learned anything from ghost hunting crews, this is a definite means of having haunting occur! Right?!
  4. War – two major wars that shaped Williamsburg was the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
  5. The years that went by claiming the lives of those that lived in Williamsburg. Okay
Have any of you visited Williamsburg, VA? What were your thoughts? Is this a place you would like to visit? Let me know! 🤗☺️
